Alfred Sports Center
Founded in 1963 by the Curran family, the Alfred
Sports Center has been one of the oldest operating
Alfred Businesses. It has evolved over the years
from starting as a ski shop to a four season
sporting goods store, to include a screen printing
operation and vinyl graphics. Its future has not yet
been decided at this time. Started a ski shop to 4
seasons sporting goods store.
Alfred Sports Center Ski and
Snowboard Center-
The Ski and Snowboard Center is a part of the
Alfred Sports Center founded in 1963. The Curran
family also operated Happy Valley until it closed in
1982. In 2006 they became operator of the Ski Shop
at Swain Ski Center. Last spring after Swain Ski
Center announced the closing of the slope, the Ski
and Snowboard Center returned to its Alfred
location. With a buyer and new operator of Swain
this fall (2009) the Ski and Snowboard Center
returned to Swain where some of its assets were
located when the fire struck. It will continue to
operate there.
Collegiate Restaurant
The Collegiate, located in the Rosebush
building, was founded in 1924. John and Angie Ninos
bought it in 1949. It has been operated by John Jr.
and his wife Chelly since 1996. It has been a
central gathering place for more than 85 years and
is distinguished by its collection of Greek paddles
from AU and ASC fraternities & sororities, many of
which no longer exist. For many fraternity brothers
and sorority sisters it is the last piece of history
connecting their fraternity or sorority to Alfred.
Many local people, faculty and staff members
regularly enjoy a family style breakfast there, as
well as many families and students enjoy dinner out
at the family style diner. With the extensive smoke
and water damage in the building its reopening date
has not yet been determined, but John says it will
reopen. Several employees have been relocated to
John & Chelly’s Terra Cotta Coffee House in an
effort to expand service and fill the void left by
the temporary closing of the “Jet”. The Terra Cotta
Coffee House is open 7am – midnight, 365 days a
year.
Hair Care -
Located in the building owned by Cindy Fraser,

there until here retirement in 1985. The Rawadys own
the building that houses both the Kampus Kave and
the Collegiate. There was extensive smoke and water
damage to the building. Their front end business is
temporarily closed but they are still offering their
screen print and embroidery business to their
customers and can be reached at 607-587-9233.
West Side Wine & Spirits-
Located in the Curran’s building with its
entrance on West University St., the business was
completely destroyed along with the Sports Center.
The Curran family is currently trying to secure a
location to reopen the business and hopes to
finalize plans to do so soon.

The fire displaced 9 residents, all but one
students of Alfred University or Alfred State
College. Tenants suffered smoke damage, lost food,
and endured cleaning expenses to their belongings.
Most had no insurance. Their respective schools have

tenants should be able to return in a relatively
short time depending on the clearing of the rubble
of the Curran building.

the Curran Family, located over the Alfred Sports
Center. The fire displaced 11 residents, all
students of Alfred University or Alfred State

The fire displaced 5 residents, all students of
Alfred University or Alfred State College. Their
respective schools have provided housing and the
